Transition 1 (Summer to Autumn)

A Still Life in the tradition Dutch and Flemish Masters’ style symbolising the transition from Summer to Autumn. Dried flowers from high summer are arranged with the last of the roses (renowned for representing beauty and love) and cosmos that are adding colour to a fading garden. The lavender was so popular with the bees and butterflies but now is spent although still smelling gorgeous. Around the base of the vase is a mixture of flowering ivy and oak leaves with their acorns. Ivy is often associated with fidelity and even eternal life. The English Oak is the symbol of strength and durability while its fruit, the acorn, symbolises immortality. Plums and greengages, the last of the English stone fruits, are nestled amongst apples and pears representing the transition from summer to autumn produce. There are souvenirs from summer walks, comprising white stones, shells and sea glass collected from the beach. Memories of long, bright days.

Time is running out for Summer, the days are shortening and Autumn approaches at increasing speed
